Moments of Resilience and Culture
The Underground Powwow
One of my favorite opportunities to shoot arose in the intriguing basement of a tall building nestled in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It was during that pivotal time when COVID-19 was beginning to be more controlled, allowing Native and Indigenous people to reconnect and joyfully celebrate our vibrant culture once again.
The only element truly missing was the comforting and familiar smell of frybread, Navajo(Indian) Tacos, and occasionally a mutton Sandwich, which typically brings back an abundance of warm and cherished memories. The rhythmic sound of the drum echoed beautifully throughout the space, creating an incredibly special and intimate atmosphere. The singers creating an atmosphere that creates a connected feeling to our culture of resilience. It truly felt like a basement powwow, full of energy and warmth!
Capturing this unique experience was not just a moment; it was something I will always treasure deeply. The images taken in that basement not only showed our resilience but also highlighted the celebration of our community spirit. Each portrait reflected our shared heritage and the unwavering strength we find in each other. Those moments, filled with heartfelt laughter and uplifting song, proved that we can discover connection and joy in even the most unexpected places.
As the beats played on, it became clear that this gathering was not simply a reunion; it was a powerful and strong statement of our identity, culture, and traditions as Native American or Indigenous. I am sincerely thankful for the chance to document such a significant event, where the spirit of our ancestors felt vividly present, guiding and supporting us.
This extraordinary experience has only strengthened my unwavering commitment to capture our people's spirit through the lens of my camera, ensuring that our stories are told, celebrated, and cherished for generations to come.
